Object description

Tartan check silk wedding dress in purple shot silk with wide window-pane checks in blue and charcoal; rounded neck edged in piping; v-shaped front bodice with double ruffle and piping trim; 4 bones; long sleeves with matching ruffles at cuffs; full skirt in 7 panels, gathered to waist; cream brushed cotton lining to bodice and maroon glazed cotton lining to skirt; skirt lining separate from the outer silk except at waist and hem, which is edged with narrow braid. Worn by Ellen Whipp (b.1826) when she married William Hargreaves in 1849 at Clitheroe Congregational Church. Her family owned a cotton mill, and William was a master grocer. Her daughter, Mary Whipp Hargreaves, married in 1879 and her dress is 2009.3.
