Here, tour guide John discusses Norman Archipelago by John Brett (1885) in relation to taking notice:

The French refer to the Channel Islands as ‘English Normandy’ and this breath-taking depiction reveals the artist’s fascination with the relationship between geology, vegetation and light. We are immediately drawn into the painting’s own universe by its dreamlike tranquillity. Yet an extended viewing allows us also to glimpse little hints of movement. And so we detect slight ripples in the water, a gentle current between two rocks and several yachts seemingly on voyages into a sunlit world of nature. Perhaps this and similar works will enable each of us to make a similar journey – to a space that lies beyond the pressures and preoccupations that can too easily govern our everyday lives.

Everyone welcome.
