Few stretches of Britain’s coastline can match Mount’s Bay in Cornwall for dramatic history. Always a notorious danger to sailing ships; it was witness to the coming of the Armada in 1588 as well as to the tsunami that followed the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. And yet our artist here invites us to contemplate this sea almost as a living being with a purpose and intelligence of its own. In the deepening colour of the morning, the undulating waves seem to complement the shifting clouds and we find ourselves longing to inhale the scent of the salt breeze.
