Below tour guide John Ward shares his thoughts on The Adoration of the Golden Calf  by Claude Lorrain (1660)

He writes:

What a beautifully strange thing light is. In this majestic painting, it is magically filtered by the trees to illuminate a gripping human drama in the foreground. Beyond, our vision is drawn into a remarkably deep and idyllic landscape whilst the highly atmospheric sky completes our sense of wonder.

As a very young man, the artist Claude Lorrain left his home in north-eastern France to study the special qualities of the unique light that is to be found in the lowland region surrounding Rome. There he was to remain for the rest of his long life and driven by his enquiring mind, he continually took art into new worlds. Can this extraordinary masterpiece help us to reflect upon the true value of the adventure that is lifelong learning?
