Art collective Re-Dock present Social Doodle Bots, a creative activity for robo-curious adults
Manchester Art Gallery
Thursday 5 May 2016, 6pm–8pm
Free, drop in
Make Space in your life for this creative, artist led workshop for adults. Adults often don’t get the chance to play enough but artists are brilliant at being playful and we want to share this more.
Re-Dock are an art collective who are interested in creating Doodle Bots, which are mark making robots that move around randomly, drawing colourful trails. In response to the robotic and AI themes of The Imitation Game exhibition, we will be making Social Doodle Bots. These bots will be equipped with limbs and antennae so that they can spike, stroke, draw on and grab hold of each other. Participants will be challenged to make their own jittery drawing robot with limbs or antennae and then release it onto the group canvas to see how it mixes and collaborates with the other robots.
No technical skills needed.
The activity will be used to introduce and explore themes addressed by The Imitation Game exhibition.
– Are robots and autonomous systems capable of making art?
– How should artists collaborate with robots?
– How does the creative use of robots relate to earlier artists’ incorporation of chance and randomness into artworks?
All materials provided.
