Volunteers are vital to the life of our galleries.
Our projects and activities often extend further than we could possibly imagine, due to the energy, ideas, enthusiasm and passion of volunteers that give their time to the galleries.
Across our two venues, Manchester Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume, we work with over 70 volunteers. Our volunteers deliver tours, facilitate discussion sessions, support artists to deliver our workshop programme and help out behind the scenes through research, cataloguing and conservation work.
We love working with volunteers and we aim to provide volunteering opportunities that are interesting, engaging and rewarding.
Volunteering at Manchester City Galleries can really help you to gain all sorts of new skills, feel involved in the life of the gallery and meet new people.
Volunteering at Manchester Art Gallery makes me feel immensely proud. I always want to tell people about the gallery and I say how it put my life in a whole new direction. I have never painted so much in all my life, as a result of the support at opportunities at Manchester Art Gallery. I am able to give myself to projects and see positive results, and to see children laugh and be wowed by my volunteering is amazing.

You don’t need to know lots about art or art history to become a volunteer at Manchester City Galleries, we just ask for a commitment to the role, an open mind and a willingness to get involved.
We offer opportunities to adults over the age of 18 who live, work or study in the Greater Manchester area. If you are interested in volunteering with us fill out the enquiry form below.
You will then get added to our enquiry list. When a new volunteer opportunity opens up we will send you full details, along with a short application form to fill out.
Opportunities can vary, sometimes nothing comes up for a few months then suddenly lots come all at once. Please don’t be disheartened if you don’t hear from us immediately. We are always thinking of new ways to include volunteers in the work of the gallery whilst at the same time making each experience and opportunity meaningful for existing volunteers.
Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to involve everyone who approaches us. However there are lots of opportunities across the city for volunteering in museums, galleries and for cultural events, so we will make sure people on our enquiry list hear about those opportunities.
