Archive Officer

We are looking for an archivist to complete the cataloguing of the Manchester Together Archive.

The Manchester Together Archive is a collection of the public response to the Manchester Arena attack of 22 May 2017. It is made up of the thousands of tributes that were left across the city centre by members of the public and includes personal mementos, candles, soft toys, balloons, written notes, cards, poems, artworks, decorative objects and other items. It holds great cultural and emotional significance to the people of Manchester and those closely affected by the attack. Different facets of Mancunian identity are represented and the outpouring of love, solidarity and grief represented by the items in the archive demonstrates a huge range of creative expression.

Archive Officer

We are looking for an archivist to assist with the transformation of the management of Manchester Art Gallery’s institutional archive.

The archive has the potential to provide a better understanding of the organisation’s history, informing our collection review, decolonising work and improving our transparency and accountability. It can also help to work more creatively, inspiring curiosity and facilitating new research. However, its current state of being partially listed poses some challenges and makes it difficult for both staff and the public to fully understand and utilise this invaluable resource. The lack of formal processes for transferring new content to the archive contributes to the increased backlog of material. We will also need to temporarily relocate the archive due to a wider capital funded programme for gallery building and storage improvements. Without careful management, this has the potential to place the archive collection at greater risk.
