Self Portrait Study

Adolphe Valette, 1876 - 1942

Self Portrait Study

Adolphe Valette 1876 - 1942

Summary

Self portrait of the artist in the impressionistic style, depicting the bust section of the figure. The figure looks rather ominously at the viewer, we are positioned in his direct line of gaze, which is even more disconcerting as the eyes are not painted in any great detail. The background is mottled with many illuminated shades of white and yellow, there is sketchy detail on the dark jacket and white cravat, the artist has a full beard and moustache. The canvas is mounted on board.

Self-Portrait 1912 Adolphe Valette 1876-1942 Oil on canvas This unfinished self-portrait painted in his thirties shows Valette as a dapper, intense young man with a fashionable waxed moustache. Dramatically lit from behind, it conveys the image of a romantic artist, whose effect on his students can only be imagined.
