Portrait of Admiral Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), scientist and engineer, after Reynolds; three-quarter length, sitting at left, directed towards the right and looking to the front, right hand on arm of chair, as if he was about to stand up, left arm resting on the table beside him, with a globe, writing implements, books, papers, and a letter, inscribed 'Cras Ingens iterabimus aequor' ('tomorrow we shall set out upon the vast ocean') from Odes by the Roman poet, Horace. In 1766 Joseph Banks accompanied the expedition of Constantine Phipps to Labrador and Newfoundland; 1768-71 accompanied Captain Cook on the HMS Bark Endeavour, his first voyage to the Pacific; 1772 led a voyage of scientific exploration to Iceland. From 1773 he was King George III's principal adviser on scientific matters, based at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
