Hoveton St.Peter

John Crome 1768 - 1821

Summary

This atmospheric landscape is rendered using deep shading and soft, smudged line-work. More than half of the composition is filled by the thick group of trees on the right hand side that are shadowed due to their close proximity to one another and their density. In between the trees in the foreground there are also thick bushes and, together with the trees, they border the pond that is in the middle foreground. In the middle ground, just behind the pond a fence can be seen running along its banks. On the left hand side, beyond the trees, rolling hills and fields can be seen stretching into the horizon. The sky that is visible beyond the trees is filled with large, billowing clouds.
