Mare and Foal
Summary
In the foreground of this print is a small foal lying on the ground; it has its head held upright facing the viewer despite lying stretched across the width of the foreground with its legs bent underneath it. In the upper half of the print there is another, much larger horse. Only the head, neck and front legs of this second horse can be seen as the rest of its body is cut out of the frame. The horse is facing straight on to the viewer but its attention is on the foal as it bends its neck down touching the foal’s body with its nose. Behind the horses a small amount of the landscape can be seen, predominantly trees which run horizontally across in the background and the sky in the top right hand corner. An early print used to illustrate an article in the Artists' Rifles Journal, reviewing Nash's solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery, London, February 1921.
