The Fairies

James Nasmyth 1808 - 1890

Summary

The scene is extremely busy. The interior is ornately decorated with intricate scultpural details as well as the elaborate furnishings that look somewhat gothic. Throughout the scene there is a multitude of small figures. Some of the figures can be seen seated or climbing on the carved desk and chair to the right. There is also a crowd of figures forming a semi-circle around the hearth of the lavishly carved fireplace to the left of the scene. Within the semi-circle there is also a small group of figures who seem to be the centre of attention. In the room there is also a number of portraits, a bookshelf and window to the centre right. Such decorations as the helmuts above the fireplace and the coats of arms to the left of it and above the bookshelf, give the room a historical appearance.
