The Visitation

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

This print has no gradation of tones but is instead created through sharp, precise linework which gives it an almost stylised appearance. The scene depicts two women who are seen in profile and who are embracing one another. The woman to the right is seated on a stool, her dress falling in deep creases of fabric, with her face turned upwards and her arms raised. The other woman is wearing a similar dress but she is standing and is therefore bent down to kiss the other women. Both women's faces and arms mirror one another as their lips touch and they both have their arms raised to hold the other's head.
