King Lear and Cordelia
Summary
One of the most striking features of this print is the intricacy and delicacy of the linework which allows for the detailed rendering of the three figures in the scene and the representation of the different textures and folds of the fabric on the clothes that the figures wear. Little detail is shown in relation to the interior as a setting as the background is dense shadow and the foreground is filled by the figures apart from the curtain which runs down the left hand side. All attention is directed towards the figures; an elderly man who is seated to the right, bent over with his head facing downwards, with a man standing behind him and a woman seated to his left. Whilst the elderly man is seated on some sort of chair which is draped in fabric, the woman is kneeling on the floor with her face in her hands as if she is crying or distressed. The younger man standing behind the elderly man seems to be supporting him as he has his hands on the older man's shoulders and is looking downwards at him.
