Summary

This scene depicts the biblical story of Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had asked his disciples to keep watch whilst he prayed but they fell asleep. In the print Jesus is positioned in the upper right middle ground and he is shown in profile, facing to the right, kneeling on the floor, naked with his hands raised in an attitude of prayer. His naked body stands out against the darker linework of the landscape around him, particularly the bush which is just behind him slightly to the left. In the left of the foreground two of his disciples are asleep resting against the tree which runs vertically through the composition. One of the disciples is seated with his knees pressed to his chest and with his head resting against the tree facing towards the viewer, whilst the second disciple has his back to the viewer and is just visible to the left of the tree on which he also leans.
