Despair

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In the centre of the composition is a woman sat on the ground with her head bent over against her knees. She is seen in profile and she is facing to the left. Her position seems quite awkward and cramped and this, along with her crumpled gown, bare feet, and loose long hair which has fallen forwards, gives her a dishevelled appearance. The rest of the scene has little detail; the surrounding landscape is largely quite shadowed with only a few blades of grass indicated and the horizontal linework of the sky suggests that it is a bit cloudy.
