The Street

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

This is quite a stylised street scene which shows a street lined on either side with terraced buildings. The left row of terraces are cast in shadow and therefore not much of the details of the buildings can be made out apart from the roof tops and chimneys. In contrast to this, the row of terraces on the right are highlighted so that all of the terraces can be seen. In the foreground, in front of the row of terraces to the right, are two women, one is standing and the other is seated in a doorway. Both of the women are turned away from the viewer and looking up at the sky which is dark and cloudy with a strong wind blowing to the left.
