The Quarrel
Summary
The landscape in this print is not very detailed, its rural nature is shown through the detail of the grass in the foreground and the sloping hills in the background. However, this allows for the two figures, a man and a woman, to be the focal point of the composition. The man is shown standing to the left hand side with his back to the viewer and with his left arm held up and his right hand stretching out towards the woman. His face is cast completely into shadow so that it appears as a silhouette against the sun which is positioned behind him. The woman is also looking away from the viewer but she is seated on the ground with her weight on her arms as she twists to look behind her at the skyline rather than the man. The sky is significant as it seems to follow the diagonal line up to the left that is created through the form of the seated woman and standing man as the clouds are moving to the left and the linework of the sky follows a curve up to the left. This is further emphasised by the direction of the wind which is also shown to be blowing to the left through the way it moves the man's hair.
