The Marsh
Summary
This is quite a simple composition as the scene shows a woman seated in the foreground of a very flat landscape, looking out to the left at three birds flying just above the horizon line. She is sitting with bare feet, her knees drawn to her chest and with her right elbow resting on her legs as she leans her head on her hand. This position creates a number of folds in the fabric of the dress she wears which are shown through the curving linework. As she is seen in profile and is looking away from the viewer at the birds not much of her face is visible despite her pinned back hair. The birds are extremely stylised and are therefore depicted as loose cross shapes in the sky. All of the linework in the print is quite thick and dense which limits the amount of detail that can be given and therefore the sky, apart from the birds, is left completely untouched, and the landscape is depicted using simple horizontal lines, with vertical lines in the foreground to indicate grass.
