Bookplate of Geoffrey Keynes
Summary
This prints purpose as a bookplate is indicated by the inscription at the base of the image which reads GEOFFREY KEYNES. Above the inscription the scene shows three figures in the foreground who appear to be dancing and are all wearing dresses. The figure to the left has both arms raised and one leg extended, the central figure also appears to be twisting and has both arms out-stretched, and the figure to the right is bending forwards, facing towards the other two figures, with both arms out in front of it. There is no landscape detail apart from the small bit of land that the figures are on in the foreground, so the majority of the composition is filled by the clouded sky. There is a strong sense of movement and wind which is created through the disagonal lines which run from lower left to right through the sky, and also through the way the dresses worn by the figures seem to cling to their bodies on the left and billow out to the right. The whole scene is made dramatic through the strong contrasts between light and dark as there is no tonal gradation between the black and white.
