The Duckpond

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

This rural scene is rather dark with strong highlights where the light falls from the right hand side and casts long shadows to the left. Running across the middle ground is a large pond whose water reflects the scenery around and which has six ducks swimming across it. In the foreground, standing on the bank of the pond, is a woman who has her back to the viewer and is seen in silhouette as she looks down towards the ducks. Beyond the pond there is another woman, again seen in silhouette, but she faces the viewer as she looks across the pond at the ducks and the other woman. In the distance there are three large trees whose trunks fill the frame and further behind these there are large hedges to the right. The sky, which is clear, is glimpsed through a clearing just to the right of centre, before more hedges block the view on the right.
