Man's End

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In the centre of the composition there is a large signpost with two posts pointing to the left and right, both inscribed with 'TO MANS END'. Following these directions are two men, both seen in profile, walking away from one another as they head in opposite directions along the path that runs horizontally along the foreground. The man on the left hand side is quite young, wearing a suit and stepping out with his right leg forwards and both arms outstretched. Whilst the man on the right also wears a suit and echoes the younger man in stepping forwards with arms outstretched, his stride is smaller and he needs the help of a stick which he holds in his left hand. He is evidently much older than the man on the left as he has a hunched over back, bald head and large beard. Behind the men there is little background detail apart from a hill with a town on the top in the centre with two paths leading to it from both the left and the right. The sky fills two thirds of the composition with large clouds present to the right.
