The Sailor's Wife

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

Whilst the majority of this scene has limited detail, with the sky completely free of clouds and the sea depicted through flat black, the foreground shows a woman with two children standing on a wooden platform. The woman standing in profile wears long draped clothes and has her face turned away from the viewer as she looks into the distance to the right across the sea. In her arms she holds a baby who has it's head resting on her shoulder and is pressed against her body. The second child stands just to the right of the woman and is depicted with it's back to the viewer, clutching at her dress and legs with it's left arm and raising it's right arm as if it is waving out to sea towards a small white spot just below the horizon. The child is facing the direction that the woman is looking towards.
