The Lost Traveller
Summary
This rural landscape has a subdued tone as there are dark clouds in the sky and on both sides there are stark black trees whose leaves have fallen. The trees are particularly dense on the right hand side growing up in the middle ground behind the decline of the slope of the straw field in the foreground. Just to the left of centre in the foreground is a circular clearing which is lit up against the darkness of the landscape by a small wood fire in the centre. The smoke of the fire rises up through the composition creating a focal point and leading the eye down from the sky towards the small figure sat just to the right of the fire. The figure, which is sat hunched over it's knees, is hard to distinguish against the detailed linework of the surrounding straw and is mainly in shadow despite the close proximity to the fire.
