Houses

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In the foreground of the scene there is a large tree on the right hand side which casts a long shadow to the left across the fields; however, this is not the focal point of the composition instead it is the three houses in the middle ground to the left. The houses all appear quite regular and similar to one another, following the same formula of square windows, a large sloped roof and central chimney, although they do vary in size with the largest house in the middle. The houses are set into the landscape as they are surrounded by fields with only a cart track in the left foreground leading to them. The fields in the foreground slope back towards them whilst more fields can be seen stretching into the distance behind them. The fields are shown to be well tended as the linework gives the impression of ploughing and there are few other plants apart from some trees and bushes on the borders of the fields to the right. The sky appears to be bright despite the clouds.
