The Baptism

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

This scene depicts two male figures in the process of a baptism. The bearded male figure getting baptised is standing up to his knees in the river which runs horizontally along the foreground with his head bowed and his arms stretched out either side of him. The other male figure is kneeling on the riverbank, just in front of the other man, also with his head bowed but both his hands are raised in front of him and above the other man's head in blessing. The men are both similar in physique and build with quite elongated arms, legs and torsos. The rest of the scene is quite simple with only a few hills above the river and the empty sky filling the upper half of the print.
