The Prodigal Son

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

This scene represents the moment of the son's return in the biblical story of 'The Prodigal Son'. There are two kneeling male figures seen in profile. The man on the left appears to be the father as he is older with a bald head and full beard, and he is fully robed. He is the more upright of the two men as he leans his head forwards to kiss the top of his son's head and holds both of his hands in his. The son is shown on the right hand side wearing no clothes apart from a loin cloth and looking quite emancipated. He is bowed over with his head facing the ground as he receives his father's kiss.
