Low Tide

Keith Robinson

Summary

This print has a limited palette with a leafy-toned green the dominant colour throughout, it acts as a base from which details are picked out in black and white. The scene appears to be quite gloomy through the suggestion of shadows in the foreground that seem to form a cross in the lower half of the scene and the hint of clouds in the sky. In the foreground there is the silhouette of a man, with only his face picked out in white. Behind him seems to be a fenced off area with triangular signs fixed to tall poles around the perimeter. The centre of the enclosed area is highlighted in white which draws the eye towards it as it is at the centre of the composition. Either side of the fenced off area are two buildings, though they are implied through form rather than through close details. Throughout the composition there is a contrast between the loose, broken application of colour in some places, like the sky, with the strong dense application of colour, as with the figure and the details of the fencing.
