Manchester Portraits, 1st Series, Folio of 12 lithographic drawings
Sir William Rothenstein 1872 - 1945
Summary
Manchester Portraits, a series of twelve lithographic drawings by William Rothenstein each with a leaf of text loosely inserted featuring Mr. A. Brodsky, the Misses Gaskell, Principal Hopkinson, Alderman Hoy, Sir Bosdin T. Leech, Dean Maclure, Mr. George Milner, Mr. Herbert Philips, Mr. Charles Rowley, Mr. William Simpson, Mr. Reuben Spencer and Mr. T. R. Wilkinson.. Published by J.E. Cornish, St. Ann's Square, Manchester in 1900. The series is dedicated 'To Miss Gaskell and Miss Julia Gaskell these twelve drawings are gratefully dedicated, by their author'. The introduction reads "Seven years agao, in the hopeful fashion of extreme youth, I joyously undertook my first book of portraits. Each succeeding one has proved a more serious task, and, with a growing conscience, I only now fully realise the gravity of an undertaking of this kind. The exigencies of my sitters are not always my own; at the same time, if an unsympathetic rendering of the features or character of any of those included in the present series cause them, or their friends pain, I would take this opportunity to apologise for my lack of insight. I wish also to record my obligations to Mr. Charles Rowley for his kind and energetic help in the preparation of his folio. W. Rothenstein, Kensington, W.". Charles Rowley financed and organised this project. His later proposal to commission a second series was abandoned.
