The Lost Apple

Thomas Stothard 1755 - 1834

Summary

The linework of this lithograph is extremely striking, it is very freely and expressively rendered. The scene shows a young woman standing outside a ramshackle thatched building in the countryside. Inside the building there is a young boy peeping over the top of the door, looking down towards a pig's snout which is only just visible on the left-hand side as the rest of its body is not shown. The woman seems unaware of this, standing at centre right, facing to the right. She wears a bonnet and dress with a long apron that she is holding bunched up around her waist. The density of the linework in the top right hand corner makes the scene appear dark and also draws the eye towards the face of the young woman. The rural surroundings are suggested through the tree in the background to the right and the bushes at the bottom right hand corner.
