Clair de la Lune dans le Valmandois

Charles Francois Daubigny 1817 - 1878

Summary

This rural scene is lit by the light of the moon that is high in the sky, slightly off centre to the left. There is just enough light to see that on the left-hand side in the middle ground there is a dense group of trees whilst on the right-hand side although there are two trees it is mainly a clear field with three hay stacks in it. In the foreground, to the right and in the deepest shadow, there is a man walking with two cows on a tether, one walking in front of him and the other walking behind him. Although the foreground does not seem to have much other detail the line-work becomes more expressive as it suggests the rough texture of the grassy ground that is partially lit by the moonlight.
