Portrait of a Man

Edward Wolfe 1897 - 1982

Summary

This is a portrait of a young man showing only the head and the tops of the shoulders like in a bust. The subject is facing the viewer but appears to be looking to the left. The print has no modeling using instead an expressive linework which is thick, bold, and freely drawn. This means that his features are rendered through simple linework in an almost caricature manner. His beard is created through a series of looping lines, whilst the suit jacket he wears is created through a few strokes and the spots of his tie are so freely drawn that some appear as dark dots of ink.
