L'Epervier (The Sparrowhawk)

Pablo Picasso 1881 - 1973

Summary

Framed by a narrow, free hand line border is a bird of prey seen in profile. The bird faces out to the right and is just off centre in the composition. In contrast to the narrow border the bird is depicted using thick, bold, loose lines and it was clearly rendered after the border as, in the bottom left hand corner, the birds feathers overlap the border. The bird has a simplified appearance through the loose line-work, particularly around its face. The feathers of the bird are suggested through the spotted areas of line-work. Apart from the bird there are no other details in the composition.
