Summary

Domestic interior. To the left a woman is sitting on a low step with a child on her lap; holding the child in her arms with her head to the child's head. At the left of the woman is a cat, stretching out to the right. Through the window behind them a man's face can be seen at the bottom right corner. There are lines radiating from the woman's head. There is a chimney to the right and a wooden seat with arms to the left.

The Vigin and Child with the Cat 1654 Rembrandt Harmenensz van Rijn 1606-1669 Etching This intimate scene from the childhood of jesus has an immediacy rendered by the simple use of line. The constantly changing direction of the hatched lines give the image a sense of form , light and pattern. Rembrandt often reworked his etching plates; here there is evidence of burnishing to the left. Joseph is outside the room looking in; could he once have been inside by the fireplace?
