Study of a young man's head, an arm, and a hand

Filippino Lippi

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Filippino Lippi. The drawing is on a pale mauve paper, with highlights picked out in white, and shows three studies in close proximity. The largest is of the head of a young man with curly hair, wearing a hat. The man is gazing downwards, and has a thoughtful or wistful expression. Immediately below this, extending from where his neck would be, is a muscular forearm with a hand clenching a stone. Below this, in the bottom right-hand corner, is another study of a hand, also possibly holding something. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "6. FILIPPINO LIPPI (b. about 1457; d. 1504) STUDY OF A YOUNG MAN'S HEAD, AN ARM, AND A HAND Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, K.G., Chatsworth. Silver point on mauve-tinted paper, heightened with white, 27.9 x 19.2 cm. (11 x 7 9/16 in.). The hand of the outstretched arm apparently grasps a stone, and may therefore be a study for a St. Jerome. This drawing is mounted with several other fragments on a sheet which belonged to Vasari's collection. It is not catalogued by Berenson. L. B. [S. A. Strong, Reproductions of Drawings by Old Masters at Chatsworth, pp. 5 and 6, Pl. 14.]"
