Portrait of himself as a boy

Raphael (after) 1483 - 6 Apr 1520

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Raphael. The drawing is a portrait of a boy, who is looking directly at the viewer. He has straight, shoulder-length hair and is wearing a hat with its brim folded up. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "6. RAPHAEL (b. 1483; d. 1520) PORTRAIT OF HIMSELF AS A BOY Oxford, Ashmolean Museum. Presented to the University by a Body of Subscribers, 1846. From the Wicar, Harman, Ottley and Woodburn Collections. Black chalk heightened with white. 38 x 26 cm. (15 x 10 1/4 in.). Despite the age of the artist this exquisite drawing must be classed with the early studies made for the Coronation of the Virgin. Even under the influence of Perugino Raphael as a draughtsman was himself from the first. Here he is possessed of that tender vision and delicately tempered power which has given him his place in art. C. R. [Robinson, Critical Account, p. 140, No. 26; Colvin, Oxford Drawings, II, 4.]"
