A bend in the Amstel, near the Chateau of Kostverloren

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows a bend in a river, on which there are several boats. Two figures on horseback ride along the bank at the edge of the river. A little further back from the water's edge is a line of leafy trees, with several buildings interspersed. A tower is visible behind the trees, just left of centre. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "20. REMBRANDT (b. 1606; d. 1669) A BEND IN THE AMSTEL, NEAR THE CHATEAU OF KOSTVERLOREN Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, K.G., Chatsworth. From the Flinck Collection. Pen and bistre and bistre wash. 13.5 x 24.7 cm. (5 5/16 x 9 11/16 in.). Identified by Mr. Frits Lugt as representing a bend in the Amstel near the Chateau of Kostverloren, the tower of which appears above the trees. Similar motives appear in reverse in the background of the etched Landscape with a Cottage and Hay-barn of 1641 (B. 225, H. 177), and in several other drawings. The later etching, the Landscape with Trees, Farm buildings and a Tower (B. 223, H. 244), seems also to have been based in part on studies of the cottages and trees shown in the present drawing. A.
