Summary

Scene outside a classical temple, framed with an archway. There is a group of figures to the left foreground; a beggar and two men standing over him. The beggar is seated with his back to the viewer and he raises his hat towards the man to the left, who has his arms outstretched and looks down at the beggar. The other man has his back to the viewer and is looking down and over his left shoulder at the beggar. There are two onlookers to the far left edge of the picture. To the right the steps of the temple can be seen in the background, with crowds of people surrounding them. Smoke is billowing to the right from the temple entrance.
