Summary

This tense scene shows two footballers as they try to gain possession of the ball which is between their two outstretched legs. The figures seem to be pressing against each other, the figure to the right slightly behind stretching forwards to get the ball whilst the figure to the left has a wide stance as if trying to hold his position and hold off the other figure. They are both depicted in quite a sharp, bold, geometric manner, and the man to the left is wearing a red and blue striped shirt and socks whilst the man to the left is wearing a plain black shirt and plain brown shorts with striped brown and black socks. The manner of depiction and their clenched fists seems to further emphasise the struggle between the two figures. The position they hold creates a sense of weight and movement within the composition as their outstretched legs fill the space in the lower half whilst their joined bodies create a more dense form just off centre. The background is completely plain with only a small indication of ground beneath their feet which allows for the two figures to remain the central focus of the scene.
