Windmill and Lock 1811 Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775-1851 and William Say 1768-1834 Etching and mezzotint This print is a later published state from the same plate. The professional engraver William Say has used mezzotint to add tonal range to the image, the darker tones of his mezzotint additions marrying with the heavier lines of Turner's etching. The effect of burnished mezzotint can be seen in the glow of the boat lamp emerging from the lock. Hordfall Museum Transfer 1918.1009/9
