East Gate, Winchelsea, Sussex

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775 - 1851

Summary

Landscape showing the ruins of a brick gate in the foreground. A male figure wearing a hat and carrying a basket over his shoulder can be seen on the left, surrounded by sheep and cattle being herded through the gate. He is facing to the right, towards the schematic figures that can be seen in the background on the other side of the gate. One of them is halfway up a hill to the left, facing forward, holding a large pole and gesturing with the left hand. Another is framed by the arch on the right foreground. There is a large building at the top of the hill that rises on the centre background.
