Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775 - 1851

Summary

This is a landscape with a rising hill to the right and dense trees to the left. There is a fallen tree in the foreground with its roots to the left. A figure in a uniform with his back turned to us is kneeling behind the tree with his left hand placed on the trunk and his right hand out with the handle of a sword pulled out slightly from its case. In the foreground on the right there are the scattered remains of a skeleton. A coil, possibly a large snake, is in the middle ground centre.
