Colin Blanchard 1952

Summary

A bright, colourful scene of a semi-detached house. A yellow garage and door are on the right and a white door and green garage are on the left. A chimney is in the centre splitting the two sides. A low brick wall is in front of the house with a green hedge behind the wall. Blue curtains are drawn closed in the windows on the right, the curtains in the windows on the left are open. The sky is a bright blue. A border outlines the main image with lines in red, blue, and yellow. Semi-Sunset depicts a pair of semi-detached houses, one of many, in the residential streets of Walthamstow in north east London. They are ttypical of the houses built during the 1930s. Four million new homes were built in the inter-war years and with the increase in home ownership came a sense of social status and aspiration and a greater demand for home furnishings. Colin Blanchard used a variant of the photographically- based printing techniques popular in the 1960s and 70s to draw attention to the often tiny personal choices different owners make to individualise otherwise identical houses.
