Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing from the school of Pisanello. The drawing shows three figures: the one in the centre faces forwards, the one to the left is walking towards the right with his right foot behind and both hands raised slightly in front of him, and the one on the right is standing facing towards the left with his back turned towards the viewer. All three are wearing lavish coats made of fur, and breaches that finish above the knee with tights below. The figure on the left has a wide brimmed hat, the one in the centre is wearing a tall puffed-out hat, and the one to the right has a floral headdress. The drawing appears on a piece of paper that has irregular edges and a point above the central figure. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 12 SCHOOL OF PISANELLO THREE COURTIERS British Museum, 46-5-9-143. Pen on vellum. 25 x 34 cm. (9 7/8 x 13 1/2 in.) This drawing (unfortunately very much rubbed and damaged) is signed PISANVS F in good lettering of the time and has many of the artist's minor characteristics, as in the shading and rendering of the ground with 'hooked' strokes, the pose of the figures, &c. It should especially be compared with the sheet of studies of dandies in the Ambrosiana. On the other hand it lacks the fire and spontaneity of his undoubted sketches; possibly the drawing as we now have it is the work of a copyist over an original by the master. The face of the central figure, in spite of its moustache, recalls the St. George of S. Anastasia; and the figure with the wreath has a superficial resemblance to the man seen from behind in the Berlin tondo. G. F. Hill."
