Statuette of Saint Sebastian

Holbein the elder, Hans

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Hans Holbein the elder. The drawing is of a small statue of the figure of Saint Sebastian tied to a tree, with an arrow horizontally piercing his neck, his chest, his abdomen and his right shin. There is a cloth behind him, which is wrapped around his thighs. His left arm is tied to a branch above his head, while his right is tied to a branch to the left. All the branches have been cut short so there are no leaves. The figure is standing on a rocky ground, which leads to the curve of the plinth for the statue. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 16 HANS HOLBEIN THE ELDER STATUETTE OF ST. SEBASTIAN British Museum, 1885-5-9-1612. (from the Grahl Collection.) Silver-point on prepared paper. 12.8 x 9.4 cm. (5 x 3 3/4 in.) Drawn from a carving, probably wood. C. DODGSON."
