An Old cottage at Withy
Charles Samuel Keene 1823 - 1891
Summary
Whilst the lower half of the composition is left completely empty in contrast the top half is completely filled by a cottage. The rural surroundings of the cottage are suggested by the open space around it and the trees and plants growing by it. The cottage itself seems quite rustic as its wooden beams are visible, its roof is tiled and it has plants growing up its walls. The front of the house has a small doorway with an overhanging roof which is largely hidden by the climbing plant that grows up the wall. As the front of the house is to the right the viewer is mainly looking at the left hand side of the cottage which seems to jut outwards and has interesting details like the rectangular windows, the sloping roof's and the brickwork at the base of the outer wall. Other than the cottage there are very few details apart from a fence on the left, a watering can left on the floor and two wooden posts to the right. From the print series 'Twenty-one Etchings' by Charles S. Keene. Printed by Frederick Goulding (1842–1909) and published by Astolat Press (Guildford, Surrey).
