Portrait of a Man

Hans Burgkmair

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Hans Burgkmair. It is a portrait of a man turned and looking forward and to the left. He has long, curly hair and a slight moustache and beard. The man is wearing an open jacket and a rough textured hat. His gaze is directed upwards. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 28 HANS BURGKMAIR (b. 1473; d. 1531) PORTRAIT OF A MAN British Museum, Sloane 5218-28. Black chalk. 31.2 x 22 cm. (12 1/4 x 8 5/8 in.) On the back is a sketch of a baby's head, also in black chalk. Watermark, large high crown. This fine portrait, derived from the Sloane volume of Dürer drawings, was accepted by Ephrussi as a work of Dürer himself, and even as a portrait of the elder Dürer at the end of his life. This improbably suggestion was rejected by Wickhoff and Seidlitz in their reviews of Ephrussi's book, and the drawing was attributed by both to Burgkmair. Comparison with the most remarkable portrait drawing by that master, the likeness of his father, Thoman Burgkmair (1520), at Dresden (Woermann, III, Pl. i, No. 75), makes the attribution certain. Another work of the same group is Burgkmair's portrait of himself (1511) at Hamburg (Seidlitz, Allg. Porträtwerk, viii-ix (1888, No. 17), which was also formerly attributed to Dürer. ... C. D."
