Portrait of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by David Loggan. It is a portrait of a man in the form of a miniature in an oval composition. The man is facing towards the right and looking out at the viewer. He has long, thick, grey hair and is wearing an ornate grey jacket with puffs and ribbons on the sleeves and a leaf pattern on the front. He is wearing a lace cravat. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 35 DAVID LOGGAN (b. 1635; d. about 1700) PORTRAIT OF JOHN WILMOT, EARL OF ROCHESTER British Museum, 1903-3-9-1, presented by Miss Adair. Black lead pencil, the face tinted. Oval. 13.7 x 11.6 cm. (5 3/8 x 4 1/2 in.) Signed and dated D. L. delin. 1671. This portrait of the witty and licentious Rochester, poet and boon companion of Charles II, is an exceptionally fine example of the delicately finished plumbago drawings which were much more in vogue from the days of the Restoration to those of Queen Anne. The stippling of the head with colour is unusual."
