Study for an Adoration of the Shepherds

School Titian

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing from the School of Titan. The drawing shows the Virgin Mary sitting to the right is centre and turned towards the left. She is holding the Christ Child to the left and a man carrying a stick - whom we presume to be a shepherd - is kneeling to the left facing towards them. In the right foreground is another young child walking forwards and looking up at the Virgin Mary. In the right background is some foliage and in the left background are a tree and a low building beyond. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 10 SCHOOL OF TITIAN STUDY FOR AN ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. From the Collection of N. A. Flinck. Pen and bistre. 19.5 x 25.7 cm. (7 11/16 x 10 1/8 in.). The Virgin seated, showing the Child to a shepherd who has just come up and kneels, holding a staff with wallet (?) attached. On the right, an infant (St. John?). A pretty sketch, which, though the main influence present is that of Titian, may yet be by some provincial artist in the direction of Brescia, since it shows some slight affinity to the drawing of Romanino."
