Italian Landscape
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Cornelis Cort. The drawing shows a landscape with buildings and a large knarled tree in the foreground to the left of centre. In the background is a hillside with various buildings arranged on it. Behind the large tree on the left is another building structure, which appears to be a ruin. There is a dead tree stump on the right and in the sky above this is a group of birds flying towards the left. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 18 CORNELIS CORT (b. 1533 or 1536; d. 1578) ITALIAN LANDSCAPE Collection of Christopher Head, Esq. Pen and bistre. 26.9 x 19.8 cm. (10 1/2 x 7 3/4 in.). Cort, chiefly known as an engraver, was also a painter, but drawings by his hand have not hitherto been recognised. The old attribution, however, is plausible and worthy of acceptance, even if the name 'Coert' be not an actual signature, Cort was born in Holland, and was a pupil of Hieronymus Cock. He spent some years in Venice, engraving after Titian, who received him in his house, and afterwards settled at Rome. C. D."
